Appointment
Professor Zhu Guobin has been appointed as Director of City University of Hong Kong Press with effect from 1 July 2015. Professor Zhu is concurrently Professor in the School of Law.

 

President’s Lecture
The upcoming President’s Lecture on 22 April will be delivered by Professor Ray Forrest, Chair Professor of Housing and Urban Studies and Head of the Department of Public Policy. The title of the lecture is “Equity and Inequity: Exploring Urban Residential Wealth”. For more information, visit here.

 

CityU Distinguished Lectures
Professor Yu Kwang-chung, Professor Emeritus of National Sun Yat-sen University, Taiwan, will deliver a City University Distinguished Lecture titled "From Classical Literature to Modern Poetry" on 9 April. Professor Poo Mu-ming, Paul Licht Distinguished Professor in Biology at UC Berkeley, and Director of Institute of Neuroscience at Chinese Academy of Sciences, will deliver a talk titled “Neural Plasticity: From Synapse to Cognition” on 13 April. Professor Ada Yonath, Director of the Kimmelman Center for Biomolecular Structures at the Weizmann Institute, will give a talk titled “From Basic Science to Advanced Medicine” on 21 April. Professor Wan Li-jun, President of University of Science and Technology of China, and Professor of the Institute of Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, will give a talk titled “Electrochemistry in Energy Conversion and Storage: Materials and Interfacial Structure” also on 21 April. Professor Dennis Lo, Fellow of the Royal Society in the UK, and Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Sciences, will deliver a talk titled “Non-invasive Prenatal and Cancer Tests: Two Sides of the Same Coin” on 27 April.

International ICT Expo
The 15 innovative projects that CityU will reveal at the International ICT Expo organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council will showcase our outstanding research on information and communication technologies with high application value. The Expo takes place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13 to 16 April.

 

Employers’ luncheon
A total of 300 senior management representatives from a wide spectrum of industries and sectors are expected to attend a student project exhibition and a luncheon on 9 April at which Mr Antony Leung Kam-chung, Chief Executive Officer of the Nam Fung Group, will be the keynote speaker. 

The event offers employers insight into CityU students’ employability. In the Global Employability University Survey and Ranking, an annual survey conducted by the French consulting group Emerging and the German research institute Trendence, CityU was ranked 146th, and is one of four universities in Hong Kong listed in this international ranking in 2014.

 

Secondary school visit
Around 180 secondary school teachers and students will enhance their understanding of the University at the "Shaping Your Future: a Lifetime of Difference" programme on 18 April. They will attend talks by Professor Way Kuo, University President, and prominent figures from various sectors including Mr Charles Chyi, CEO of Hong Kong and Macau at Vitasoy International Holdings Ltd; Mr Ricky Yu, Founder and CEO of Light Be; Mr Steven Lam, Co-founder of GoGoVan; Ms Stephanie Au, Olympic Swimmer for Hong Kong; and Mr Jozev Lau, novelist and CityU alumnus. The students will also visit research and teaching facilities and attend a talk given by college/school representatives on CityU's courses and study pathways.

 

Pottery exhibition
An exhibition titled “Appreciation of Liao Hong Biao’s and Huo Lan’s Pottery” will be held between 16 April and 11 May at the Singing Waves Gallery. More than 60 pieces of works crafted by master Mr Liao Hongbiao, his wife Ms Huo Lan, his sons Mr Liao Haifeng and Mr Liao Qifeng will be exhibited. The opening ceremony, which will be held at the same venue on 15 April, will be officiated by Mr and Mrs Liao, Mr Raymond Li Kue-shun, Chairman of International Shiwan Ceramics Association, Professor Way Kuo, University President, and Dr Wong Chi-tim, Director of Student Development Services. Mr Liao Haifeng will also conduct a Chinese ceramics workshop followed by the ceremony.

 

Kudos
Carman Yeung and Cacin Wong Po-ying of the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering won the Drury Medal in the Young Structural Engineers’ International Design Competition organised by The Institution of Structural Engineers, UK, with their project titled “Small Bag, Big Life”. The competition, held once every three years, encourages ingenuity, imagination and inventiveness in young engineers. This year the brief was to design transitional shelters for disaster relief operations around the world.
