New appointments

Professor Christian Wagner, Chair Professor of Social Media, has been appointed as Provost from 1 December 2020. On assuming the new role, he will relinquish his concurrent appointments as Associate Provost and Chief Information Officer. Taking on a role equivalent to Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Professor Wagner will assist President Way Kuo in providing strategic leadership in academic planning and development initiatives.   

Professor Raymond Chan Hon-fu has been appointed as Vice-President (Student Affairs) effective from 1 January 2021. On assuming the new role, Professor Chan will relinquish his appointment as Dean of College of Science. In his new role, Professor Chan will assist President Way Kuo in providing leadership in the strategic planning and policy formulation on all student matters related to the promotion of leadership training, character development, career preparation and support services to realise the University’s educational goals. 

Professor Alfred Ho Tat-kei has been appointed as Head of the Department of Public Policy. Professor Ho, who has assumed duty on 1 December, was at the School of Public Affairs and Administration at the University of Kansas, US. He is an internationally recognised leader in performance management and budgeting, e-government, and citizen engagement. 



Kudos

Yan Boxun and Cheng Feng, Year 3 students from the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Qian Xunlei, Year 4 student from the Department of Mathematics, won Second Prize in the Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) 2020. The winning project, supervised by Dr Hu Xianpeng, Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, is titled "Furnace Temperature Curve Analysis and Optimization".

Zheng Shaomian, studying for the MSc Multimedia Information Technology in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), has won Second Prize in the Zhejiang Lab Cup Global AI Competition-Video Generation Challenge 2020. The winning project, supervised by Dr Sun Yanni, Associate Professor in EE, is titled "Quadratic Video Interpolation Based on Multiple Discontinuous Frames".

Zhang Yiqing, studying for the MSc in Electronic Information Engineering, in the Department of Electrical Engineering (EE), won the 12th China Youth Science and Technology Innovation Award. The winning project, supervised by Dr Ray Cheung Chak-chung, Associate Professor in EE, and Dr Alan Lam Hiu-fung, Adjunct Professor in EE, is titled "Smart Baseball Training System". There were 91 awardees from different provinces in mainland China, and Zhang was one of the two coming from Hong Kong.
