Professor Zhongfan Liu is an Honorary Professor of City University of Hong Kong attached to Department of Chemistry from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2025.

Professor Liu received his Bachelor’s degree from Changchun Institute of Technology at Department of Chemical Engineering in 1983. He got his Master’s degree from Yokohama National University in Electrochemistry in 1987 and his PhD from The University of Tokyo in Photoelectrochemistry in 1990 as a government-sponsored scholar. He took up a postdoctoral fellowship at The University of Tokyo in 1990-1991 and at The Institute for Molecular Science (IMS) in 1991-1993. Prof. Liu returned to Peking University and set up his research group at Department of Chemistry in 1993.

Professor Liu is the world-renowned scholar and expert in nanochemistry and nanotechnology, especially in the area of nanocarbon materials covering graphene and carbon nanotubes. He has made great contributions on both the fundamental research and commercialization of graphene materials. He is the cofounder of Center for Nanoscale Science & Technology (CNST) and the founder of Center for Nanochemistry (CNC) at Peking University. He is also the founder of Beijing Graphene Institute (BGI). He established the Nanochemistry Commission at Chinese Chemical Society. Prof. Liu was elected as the member of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2011, one of the six outstanding Scientists by the Ten-Thousand-Talents Program of Chinese government in 2013, and the fellow of Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in 2015. He is the fellow of Institute of Physics (UK, 2004), Royal Society of Chemistry (2015), The Chinese Micro & Nanotechnology Association, The Chinese Chemical Society (2020), and The Chinese Chemical Engineering Society (2020).

Professor Liu is the author of over 700 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and the owner of over 140 patents. He published 9 books including 1 monograph, 3 popular science works, 1 translated book, 3 strategic research reports, and 1 personal collection. He received over 15 awards and honors including National Natural Science Award (2nd class, 2008, 2017), Eighth Nano Research Award (2021), Guohua Distinguished Scholar Award (2020), ACS Nano Lectureship Award (2018), Chinese Chemical Society-AkzoNobel Chemical Sciences Award (2012), Baogang Outstanding Teacher Award (2012), Beijing Excellent Teacher (2017), etc..

Professor Liu is currently the BOYA Chair Professor at Peking University, Editor-in-Chief of Acta Physico-Chimica Sinica, Director of Beijing Graphene Institute (BGI), Vice President of The Chinese Chemical Society (CCS), Vice Chairman of The Central Committee of JIUSAN Society, Chairman of The Beijing Municipal Committee of JIUSAN Society, Vice Chairman of The Beijing Municipal Committee of CPPCC, and the The Standing Committee Member of The National Committee of CPPCC (Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference).
