COM2201 introduces students to the fundamentals of news writing and reporting through a practical workshop approach. Students learn journalism by practicing journalism through reporting exercises, interviews, source verification activities, peer editing, newsroom simulations, and the production of original news stories. The course develops the core skills required to identify newsworthy topics, conduct interviews, gather and verify information, evaluate sources, develop story angles, and write clear, accurate, and engaging news stories under deadline. Students learn to write for different audiences and publication types while applying professional standards of accuracy, fairness, attribution, and ethics. The course also examines how journalism is evolving in response to digital media, changing audience habits, and generative artificial intelligence. Students learn how AI tools can support research, idea generation, and editing while understanding the importance of independent verification, editorial judgment, and ethical decision making.
