Course Aims

This course offers a comprehensive examination of the legal, regulatory, and business aspects of the sports, entertainment, and media industries in Hong Kong and beyond. Designed by two leading specialists, with over 30 years of industry experience each, the curriculum integrates theoretical foundations with practical applications relevant to today's dynamic market and enables students to assess the practical and legal implications of social media and artificial intelligence within these industries. 

The course covers key issues such as:   

  • Copyrights and performers' rights specific to sports and entertainment   
  • Infringement and exceptions; anti-piracy by legal and technical measures   
  • Exploitations of film, music, and sports rights   
  • Legal challenges arising from generative AI in entertainment production
  • Legal pitfalls in film and TV production and promotion        
  • Regulatory frameworks for sports betting   
  • Protection of programme ideas, film franchises and formats
  • Protection of personality rights - defamation, malicious falsehood, passing off, character merchandising, privacy and deepfake
  • Legal issues pertaining to disputes between artistes and their management companies or record companies

Students will develop essential knowledge and skills to understand the underlying legal concepts, learn from case laws and lecturers' practical experience to grow and support their career development within the sports and entertainment sectors.

Continuous Assessment: 30%
Examination: 70%
Examination Duration: 3 hours
Min. Continuous Assessment Passing Requirement: 40%
Min. Examination Passing Requirement: 40%
 

Exam:

- Understanding of basic legal rules and principles

- Application of legal rules to resolve problems

- The use of Generative AI tools is not allowed.


Applicable to students admitted before Semester A 2022/23 and Semester A 2024/25 & thereafter

Students must obtain a minimum mark of 40% in the final examination and an overall mark of 40% in order to pass the course.


Applicable to students admitted from Semester A 2022/23 to Summer Term 2024

Students must obtain a minimum mark of 50% in the final examination and an overall mark of 50% in order to pass the course.
