Recruiting Interns from City University
The following are guidelines for companies or institutions wishing to recruit City University students for internships. The guidelines are general in nature. Companies or institutions that wish to recruit students in capacities outside the scope of these guidelines are welcome to discuss their offers with our office.
Study Discipline
Internships should be intellectually stimulating in nature and must be recognized by corresponding departments, colleges, or schools at City University.
Internship Duration
Summer internships are normally 4 - 9 weeks long, starting from early June and end around mid August. In-term internship arrangements are also possible. Discuss details with Career and Leadership Centre.
Academic Recognition
Internships can be offered as non-credit bearing or credit bearing. Non-credit bearing internships carry no standard academic merit involving work that is less related to the academic specialization of the interns. Credit bearing internships, on the other hand, are more discipline specific. These internships are usually set to be equivalent to a credit-bearing course with a minimum of 3 credit units.
Company Participation
The hiring company is expected to provide students with internship training or relevant supervision to interns on the side of their work.
Assessment
For credit bearing internships, assessment will be conducted by relevant departments, colleges, or schools, and will generally cover the following:
- Evaluation by the participating company
- Student internship report/ training log book
- Company visits
- Final presentation

- Remuneration
Participating companies are recommended to provide students with training allowances for the internship. This would help provide financial support and encouragement to the interns.
- Insurance and MPF
All full-time City University students participating in university activities, including internships, are covered under a group personal accident insurance policy. Students who travel outside Hong Kong are covered under a Group Travel Insurance Policy. If an internship involves an employer-employee relationship, contribution to MPF on the company’s part may be required.
- Code of Conduct
Internship hosting companies are expected to treat student interns as their regular staff. Similarly, they are expected to behave and follow company rules as other staff of the company.
- Training
Participating companies are expected to offer training to the interns in the form of formal training programs or on-the-job training, where appropriate.
- Student Mentoring
A company mentor, or a direct supervisor should be assigned by the participating company to co-supervise and provide guidance to student interns.
- Company Visits
To maintain good communication with the hosting companies and to monitor student work placements, an Internship Coordinator or faculty members will pay visits to the companies during the internship period. Monitoring may vary from 1 to 4 times in the internship period in the form of site visits in addition to telephone interviews and email communications.
- Company Evaluation
Feedback from hosting companies regarding the work performance of the interns will form a part of the course assessment for student interns. At the end of the prescribed internship period, employers will be requested to fill out an evaluation form regarding the performance of interns.
