Work Permission & Internship

Work Permission During Studies

Full-time non-local students at the Bachelor’s level or above (Exclude exchange and visiting students) are permitted to take up study/curriculum-related internships, part-time on-campus employment and summer jobs.

Study/Curriculum-related Internships
Should be arranged/endorsed by the University with a duration up to one academic year, or one-third of the normal duration of the relevant full-time programme, whichever is shorter.

Part-time On-campus Employment
Up to 20 hours per week throughout the year.

Summer Job
Without any limit in relation to working hours and location during the summer months (from 1 June to 31 August, both dates inclusive)

No Objection Letter (NOL)

  • Eligible non-local students will receive a "No Objection Letter" (NOL) for part-time on-campus employment and summer jobs with the student visa/entry permit from the Immigration Department (IMMD) of HKSAR. The NOL remains valid throughout the duration of the approved programme of study at the University. Students should keep the letter carefully for future reference.

  • A separate NOL on internship will be issued for the internship that must be study/curriculum-related and be arranged or endorsed by the University.

  • NOL is applicable to the specific programme only. If a student is approved to transfer to study another programme, a new NOL will be issued by IMMD following receipt of an application from the institution.

  • Non-local students should seek prior permission from IMMD to take any internship not arranged by the University, or other types of work, such as voluntary or charity work. Separate applications should be made to IMMD by students themselves.

  • With effect from 1 November 2024, full-time non-local students (excluding exchange students) at Bachelor's level or above are temporarily exempted from the above employment restrictions that they may take up employment in Hong Kong during the currency of their limit of stay or within the effective period as specified in the NOL issued to them (if applicable), whichever is the shorter.
