Financial data offers invaluable insights that can greatly enhance a company’s operational management. Patrick, the BU Controller for Nestlé Hong Kong's ice cream and chilled division, understands the necessity for businesses to continuously improve their financial data analysis. This recognition led him to transition from an engineering background to a career in accounting, furthering his education with an MBA at City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) to strengthen his financial management skills.

In Hong Kong, ice cream is a cherished treat, and brands that introduce new flavours or promotions at the right time can significantly boost their market presence. Patrick emphasises that precise financial data analysis is essential for successful marketing strategies, a core responsibility in his role. "Hong Kong consumers appreciate innovative and diverse products. In a competitive market, local brands must continuously innovate while understanding consumer preferences and market shifts."

Initially majoring in industrial engineering, Patrick quickly realised that relying solely on operational data was insufficient for understanding a business's development needs. He explains that financial data, when thoroughly analysed, reveals the overall business landscape, highlighting urgent issues that management can address. This insight drives targeted solutions, steering the company toward profitability. Additionally, the impact of varying accounting standards on data analysis sparked his interest in accounting, prompting a significant career shift.

As he pursued a CPA qualification and a master’s degree, Patrick recognised the need to enhance his business knowledge for future managerial roles. The MBA programme at CityUHK, covering economics, trade, marketing, and business management, helped him fill these gaps. "I chose CityUHK for its industry-aligned curriculum and practical components, allowing students to conduct business analyses and propose solutions. The teaching team, combining academic expertise with industry experience, further enhanced the programme's appeal."

Patrick reflects on his rewarding MBA experience, where he learned to identify company issues systematically, seek solutions, and communicate effectively with other departments. One memorable experience was the ten-day "Business Consultation Tour" to Dalian, where his team developed marketing strategies for a local shopping mall. They conducted data analysis and interviewed mall operators to increase foot traffic and rental income, integrating business management knowledge through practical experience.

Before joining Nestlé Hong Kong, Patrick worked in banking but felt a stronger inclination toward the business sector. When Nestlé sought financial control talent, he seized the opportunity to apply his accounting and business management knowledge in a new career chapter.

"Post-pandemic, market competition has intensified. With Japanese, Korean, and mainland Chinese ice cream brands launching new products and engaging in price wars, I assist various teams in conducting scenario analyses. This involves evaluating the financial impact of different pricing strategies and exploring new product developments to achieve sales growth and long-term profitability, supporting the company’s sustainable development." He advises aspiring financial controllers to focus on management accounting, including business case analysis, to gain a comprehensive understanding of a company’s financial situation.

Discussing the rapid development of artificial intelligence, Patrick highlights that interpersonal communication remains irreplaceable. He highlights the importance of enhancing communication skills, enabling professionals to convey complex data analysis results to stakeholders in simple terms and to "learn how to learn," fostering adaptability to change.
