25 September 2020 Dear alumni, The 2020/21 academic year kicked off with a virtual orientation on 25 August for welcoming new students to the CityU family. To ensure freshmen have full support despite the unprecedented threats posed by the pandemic, we put together an informative online platform for centralising all the orientation activities. Kudos to everyone involved in upholding CityU’s values as we proactively seek to adjust learning and teaching while the public health situation continues to evolve. We have boosted our efforts in helping new graduates to enter the workforce. The new CityU Career Launch Scheme (CARLS) provides fresh CityU graduates with comprehensive services and support. The Scheme has received a positive response and a number of matches have been made between employers and graduates. Indeed, high performing graduates have got off to a brilliant start in their careers after securing promising job offers from local and overseas corporations. While maintaining business as usual, CityU is also helping to tackle the pandemic. Our interdisciplinary researchers from veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences, data science and building technology are working on public health strategies and measures for preventing the spread of the virus, thereby identifying ways to safeguard the public. More than HK$23 million in funding has been granted from the inaugural Senior Research Fellow Scheme and Research Fellow Scheme under the Research Grants Council. The funding highlights CityU’s research strengths, the excellence of our faculty and how we foster interdisciplinarity. The funding will help CityU scientists to advance research into mathematical theories for kinetic equations, flexible electronic technologies, nanomechanics and strain engineering, and novel light-generation technologies. We are at the forefront of establishing strategic partnerships with business leaders. In July, CityU, Tricor Hong Kong, 3 Hong Kong, Microsoft Hong Kong and TFI Digital Media Limited signed a memorandum of understanding for exploring innovative solutions that can enhance investor relations and boost innovation-led growth in Hong Kong’s financial sector. Earlier this month, the College of Engineering and the Federation of Hong Kong Industries presented the Virtual Industrial Day. The aim was to advance research collaboration with industry for developing innovative technologies, creating career opportunities for budding engineers, and nurturing cross-disciplinary professionals.

As part of our outreach efforts, CityU will confer honorary doctoral degrees on three distinguished individuals, Mr Harry S Banga, Mr Norman Chan Tak-lam, GBS, and Mr Wong Chun-hong, BBS, in recognition of their significant contributions to education and the well-being of society. Additionally, Mr Lau Tat-chuen and alumni Ms Jenny Chan Pik-ha and Dr Jennifer Ng Chui-yiu, JP, have recently received honorary fellowships for their substantial work on the development of, and service to, the University and the community.
