The Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health (IDPH) recognises there is a need to inspire and educate a new generation of young people in Hong Kong the needs of animals in our Society in order to provide them with appropriate care. Therefore, The Department proudly supports the Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) Applied Learning (ApL) Animal Care Subject, offered by SCOPE. The development of this course was at the invitation of the Hong Kong Education Bureau (EDB) and its curriculum was subsequently vetted by EDB. The Department actively participated in the design of the curriculum.
The aim of this course is to inspire secondary school students their interests in caring for animals, so that after leaving school, they will consider pursuing career pathways and options that contribute to caring for the community, through protection of the health and wellbeing of animals.
The Department is similarly delighted with the success in the Animal Care subject’s student recruitment of the first cohort, 2016. The subject received overwhelming responses from schools, students and teachers, so much so that the number of classes was increased to two, to; all places were promptly filled.
