SelfCheck System - Borrow Books DIY

SelfCheck System is now available in the Library! Users can choose to check out books themselves at their own pace with the SelfCheck Units instead of lining up at the circulation counter. It's fast, easy and private!

Where are the SelfCheck Units Located?

The SelfCheck Units are located prominently near the Library entrance, at the corner right next to the Information Counter and they are under CCTV surveillance.

How to operate the SelfCheck Units?

The SelfCheck Units are easy to operate. Just follow the instructions on the screen and scan the books desired one by one under the scanner, you can then borrow books by yourself. Once the check-out process is completed, the SelfCheck Unit will then issue a receipt with the due dates for the books for your reference. Please do not forget to remove your CityU smartcards or barcode library cards from the SelfCheck Unit before you leave.

What are the service hours of the SelfCheck Units?

The SelfCheck Units provide around-the-clock services to users, allowing checkout of books anytime the Library is open, even when the Circulation Counter is closed.

What can be checked out with the SelfCheck Units?

ALL Circulation books, except short loan items and books with CD-ROMs enclosed inside, can be self-checked.

Who are eligible to use the SelfCheck Units?

All CityU and SCOPE smartcard holders (staff and students) as well as barcode library card (e.g. JULAC Card, Alumni Library Ticket, Friends of the Library Membership Card) holders with borrowing privileges can make use of the SelfCheck Units to borrow books.

Why does the SelfCheck System fail to work for me sometimes?

You will encounter problems using the Selfcheck units under the following circumstances:

  • If the book that you would like to check out is one with a CD-ROM enclosed, or it is a short loan item (i.e. book from the Semi-closed and Closed Access Collection), then you cannot check it out with the SelfCheck Unit. Please check them out at the Circulation Counter.
  • If the book that you would like to borrow is one that has been marked with a special status on our Library System, the SelfCheck System will not let you check it out. On the Library's OPAC, you will notice that the book is denoted with a remark such as ON SEARCH, CLMS RETD, MISSING, BILLED. For books as such, please bring them to the Circulation Counter.
  • If the book that you would like to check out is non-circulating, that means, it is not for loan (e.g. materials in the Reference Collection or Serials Section), then you can only use it in the Library.
  • Fines accumulated in your library circulation account has reached the maximum limit.
  • Your library borrowing privledges have been suspended for some reasons.
  • Your CityU and SCOPE smartcard or barcode library card is bent, or broken, or expired.
