Headline : Government on target to meet pledges on THAs
Content : The Government are on target to meet the three pledges made in 1992 concerning temporary housing areas (THAs), the Governor, the Rt Hon Christopher Patten, said today (Thursday).

Speaking to the press after visiting three Kowloon THAs, Mr Patten said in the autumn of 1992, there were about 55 THAs in Hong Kong but by 1997, the Government would have
got rid of about 42 of them. He said first of all, it was the intention of the Government to rehouse three quarters of the residents who were in THAs by 1997.

"That meant about 50,000 people out of about 65,000 population in the THAs. We're well on our way to achieving that target," he said.

Secondly, he said, the Government was also committed to getting rid of all the older THAs which were built before 1984.

"We've now got rid of seven of those which means that seven still to go. And we will clear those during the course of next year, certainly by the end of 96," he said.

"Thirdly, said Mr Patten, the Government had said to those who were in THAs at the end of 1993 that they would be offered public rental housing by 1997.

"We'll be on target to hit that goal as well," he said, adding that so far over 50 per cent of those who were in THAs at the end of 1993 had been made an offer of public rental housing.

"So we are on target for meeting those objectives," said the Governor.
