In response to our President's call to maximize
students' learning opportunities, the arrangement for students
to use the CityLink Plus service which provides direct Internet
access from home has been reviewed.
Although many students are eager to use the service and there
is spare capacity in CityU's share of Internet bandwidth, the
number of student subscribers has been found to be relatively
small. This is identified as the consequence of the existing departmental
Internet budget scheme since a student who wishes to use CityLink
Plus free can only obtain budget from his/her department.
To remedy this unfavourable situation, the Computing Services
Centre (CSC) has arranged free CityLink Plus for students. Under
this new scheme, each successful applicant will be granted a budget
of ten free connection hours per month from the Central Internet
Budget. For details on the scheme and the application procedure,
please refer to the message "Central CityLink Plus Sponsorship
for Students" in PolyLink's bulletin board #000 - CSC Facilities
and Services.
After this new scheme took effect in early November, the number
of student subscribers had increased 40 folds within 1 month.
Obviously, more students can now benefit from the service.
Again, this reflects CSC's effort in providing better service
to our students. However, the scheme may be reviewed when necessary
depending on the availability of Internet resources.
