CityU's Local Newsgroups

Horizontal Rule [DEC 96]

More and more services are now available on the world wide web. Our Local Newsgroup is no exception. On 9 October 1996, the Local Newsgroups for the University was set up and released on our central news server news.cityu.edu.hk.

As you may already know, Newsgroups is an electronic news distribution service. News items (articles) in Newsgroups are categorized into different "groups" according to their specific areas. Newsgroups provides a common ground for discussion and exchange of ideas on various topics covering academic subjects, technical areas, hobbies, etc.. There are now more than 9,000 groups gathered in the international Newsgroups on various topics distributed world-wide.

CityU's Local Newsgroups in fact is a subset of our central Newsgroups services. However, it is specially designed for use only by our staff and students. It is only accessible by PCs and workstations within campus, and off-campus via CityLink and CityLink Plus services. News posted on the Local Newsgroups will NOT be distributed to other news servers.

Both staff and students can apply for creating local newsgroup(s) on various topics, provided that one of the same kind does not exist. Preference and priority will be given to staff and student organizations and interest groups. However, individual student application with a good proposal will also be considered. Organizers of PolyLink public bulletin boards are encouraged to move their boards to the Local Newsgroups.

To apply for creating a local newsgroup, all you need is to simply complete an "electronic" application form which can be found in the news item/message titled "CityU Local Newsgroups Application" in either the newsgroup "cityuhk.newsgroups.announce", or the Bulletin Board #000 "CSC Facilities and Services" in PolyLink. Simply fill in the form by using the Reply function with the original message content included. The completed application form will be sent as email to the Computing Services Centre for approval. You will be informed by email on the result of your application after it has been processed.

For your reference, the following summarizes different ways of accessing our central Newsgroups services including the CityU's Local Newsgroups:

  1. The "Newsgroups" option under the "Internet Services" submenu in the University Information Services menu;
  2. The "Netscape News" function in the Netscape Navigator WWW browser which is available on all PCs and Sun Workstations within campus;
  3. Any PC-based News reader client software (e.g. Netscape News, Microsoft Internet News, etc.) installed on any PC within campus, or connected to CityLink Plus Service off-campus;
  4. Any News reader client software available on central host computers. For example, NEWS for VMS, TIN for Unix, etc.
