By now, we have already heard a lot about Windows 95. It is time
to seriously sit down and start using WIN95. In order to ensure
a smooth migration from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95 without losing
any of the Windows 3.1 services like Information Services, Administration
Services, Pathworks Mail, PolyLink, Library Catalog System, a
task force was set up in October 1995.
During the period between May and July, pilot runs of WIN95 upgrade
were performed in CSC and 3 other departments. Based on the comments
and suggestions collected, the Windows 95 environment was fine-tuned
and ready to roll out to each department in August. If everything
runs according to schedule, the upgrade will be completed towards
the end of November this year.
No complex procedure is required to migrate to Windows 95. One
can simply choose "Setup Windows 95" on the Network
Env. Services & Env. Settings menu on the CTNET DOS menu,
follow the instructions and answer a few questions. Windows 95
will be automatically installed to the hard disk from network.
The whole process will take approximately half an hour to complete.
It may take longer if the network is busy. One point worth noting
is that along with the deployment of Windows 95, the CSC also
intends to replace the existing Pentium 90 MHz staff LAN servers
with Pentium 166 MHz machines. To have a better understanding
of the whole process and to prepare yourself for Windows 95, it
is recommended that you read this issue's "Windows 95 Task
Force Report" on page 13.
