With the support of the Vice-President (Education) and the Vice-President (Planning and Information Services), the Computing Services Centre (CSC) has organised the "Computer for Student-in-need Programme" to help students with financial difficulties to acquire a computer at home for studies. A few hundred used computers were collected during the recent campus network upgrade and they are available for loan to students at no charge. Although these refurbished PCs are not of the latest models, they are in good working conditions and sufficient to do most of the work for studies.

The first exercise was carried out in October 1998 and it was so well received that a second one was organised in December 1998 to accommodate those who missed the first deadline. More thanwpe39.jpg (5371 bytes) 300 full-time students in total were successful in their application, and each was allocated a full set of loan PC. Students can keep the PCs until their graduation and can then consider purchasing them at a nominal price at their wish. This Programme embodied the concept of resource recycling, and it is hoped that with the assistance of these machines, the students can master the necessary computing skills, and make the most of the University life.
