Course Aims

This course aims to guide students in the planning, research, and write-up of a substantial independent research project. The research topic will be chosen by the student in consultation with their supervisor and will pertain to some theme in the social scientific study of East and Southeast Asia. The research design will be fitted to the specific nature of the research and the research question, but will employ research methods students will have learned in their previous courses.
A major subsidiary aim of this course is to train students in the preparation of an effective research proposal, which is a recognized requirement for effective social research. The first semester of this course involves a classroom component that guides students through major steps in preparing their research proposal. Drawing on materials presented in these classroom sessions, students will complete key project tasks and report and discuss their progress on these tasks with their individual project supervisor.
The ability to conduct independent social research is an essential skill. Upon completion of this course, students will be better able to design and carry out major research projects, in academic or a variety of professional settings.
