Programme Aims

The research degree programme aims to provide advanced education to nurture people who can

1.    contribute to the advancement of knowledge through independent and original research;
2.    demonstrate specialist subject knowledge and a high level of transferable skills, including analytical, communication and leadership skills; and
3.    enhance economic, social and cultural development.

Programme Intended Learning Outcomes (PILOs)

Upon successful completion of this Programme, students should be able to:

1. achieve general intellectual proficiency and specialization in their chosen subject areas;
2. formulate the problems in their chosen subject areas and derive effective, innovative and original solutions to the problems;
3. apply appropriate research methodology/tools to conduct independent research;

5. create new knowledge through in-depth investigation of the chosen subject areas.

Qualifying/Annual Report Submission:
 
Students are required to submit qualifying report and annual report in compliance to the regulations or guidelines as set by the School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Such regulations and guidelines are accessible via the guidebook located at SGS website.
 

Thesis:
 
The thesis provides the major evidence of student achievements in the research degree programme. Students should write and present their thesis in English, and the thesis should be acceptable by the Supervisor and the Department Head/School Dean for examination. 
 
For thesis examination, a Panel of Examiners shall be formed. Upon the recommendation of the Department and the College, the Panel is appointed by the Committee on Research Degrees Candidature. The Panel shall follow the procedures to examine the student in compliance to the regulations or guidelines as set by the School of Graduate Studies (SGS), and make the corresponding recommendations. The thesis examination should include thesis assessment, an oral examination, and any other assessment arrangements that may be required by the Panel. 
 
The students who have successfully completed their thesis examination are required to submit both printed and electronic copies of their thesis to the SGS. The format should follow the regulations set by the SGS.

Additional Notes:
 
Students are requested to give an exit presentation on their research work in the seminars organized by the department before their submission of thesis.
