CityUHK Ranked Top 5 Globally in U.S. News & World Report Subject Ranking: Materials Science 2026-27
We are pleased to share that CityUHK Materials Science has demonstrated its world-class research excellence regarding the latest U.S. News & World Report 2026-2027 Best Global Universities rankings. MSE secured the #1 spot in Hong Kong for the 4th consecutive year and maintaining the #5 position globally. Furthermore, our strength in materials science-related areas remains exceptionally outstanding, with Nanoscience and Nanotechnology ranking #1 in Hong Kong and #8 worldwide.
Since our department’s establishment, our growth trajectory has been nothing short of phenomenal: within just 5 years, we have leaped from #30 in the world to #5 globally. This year, we surpassed Nanyang Technological University (NTU)—a key benchmark institution for our Materials Science program—for the first time!
To put our global #5 ranking into perspective, the only four institutions (Tsinghua, PKU, ZJU, SJTU) ahead of us are the absolute "best of the best" among C9 universities in Mainland China. This means CityUHK has officially placed ahead of, or tied with, the world’s most prestigious international elite universities—including the National University of Singapore (NUS) (#5; tied with CityUHK) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) (#10).
This monumental milestone is a direct reflection of the vision, continuous dedication, and exceptional performance of our Materials Science research community in CityUHK.
