Abstract: Electroactive polymers (EAPs) encompass a wide range of actuation behaviors, from low-voltage, low-strain conjugated polymers to high-voltage, large-strain dielectric elastomers (DEs). DE actuators have emerged as a key technology for soft electromechanical systems, including soft robotics, wearable haptics, and stretchable sensors. Side-chain crystallizable polymers (SCPs) exhibits dramatic, reversible stiffness changes—spanning 3 to 4 orders of magnitude—through the melting and recrystallization of their side chains. In their softened state, SCPs mimic the mechanical response of DEs, making them promising candidates for bistable actuation. Additionally, the phase transitions in SCPs enable unique functionalities such as tunable optical transmission for solar heat gain control. Another notable EAP, the well-known PVDF terpolymer, demonstrates both electrically induced strain and entropy change. Solid-state active cooling devices have been demonstrated based on the terpolymer films.
