City University of Hong Kong Press hosted a book launching ceremony for A Sensational Encounter with High Socialist China, in the City University of Hong Kong on 3th of October.

Thank you to all of our readers who came to join the book launch and showed their support. It is our honored to have the author of the book, Dr. Paul G. Pickowicz (Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and Chinese Studies, University of California), as the distinguished speaker for the event. He shared an impressive experience on his first historic visit to China in 1971. We were grateful to have Mike Chinoy (Non-Resident Senior Fellow, U.S.-China Institute at the University of Southern California, and former CNN Senior Asia Correspondent journalist) as moderator of the discussion.

We were also delighted to have other notable scholars and professionals present at the event. During the talk, Dr. Paul G. Pickowicz not only shares his feeling when he first enters China in 1971 but also explained his thoughts and insight regarding China.

If you would like to know more about China in the past, take a look at our newly published books, A Sensational Encounter with High Socialist China.

This work is a recollection of the historic visit of fourteen American students (and one Canadian) to China in 1971. The visit was one of the first approved for American scholars after the Chinese Communist Party came to power in 1949 and occurred prior to President Nixon’s famous trip (as well as that of a second group of scholars) in 1972.

One of these students, Paul Pickowicz, kept a journal and photographically documented the trip. This book is a personal account of the events leading up to their visa approvals as well as those that occurred during the journey itself. The five senses are used to connect the reader to his experience and are placed in the context of a theatrical production.
