Prof Felipe Cucker is a Chair Professor of Mathematics at City University of Hong Kong. His main research area is the complexity of numerical algorithms but he has worked as well on topics as diverse as semi-algebraic geometry or the modeling of animals on the move. He seats on the board of several prestigious journals and is currently the chairman of the Society for the Foundations of Computational Mathematics.
Geometry and painting have treated, along the centuries, a number of issues dealing with the notion of space and the aspects of perception that naturally relate to it. These treatments have been mostly independent of each other and motivated by their inner dynamics. But occasionally, thoughts from one field influenced the other in momentous ways.
