Prof. Weizhong Han is currently an Associate Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering/Department of Mechanical Engineering in City University of Hong Kong. He received his BSc in Physics from Shanxi Normal University (China) in 2003 and PhD degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China) in 2008. He then joined the Monash University as a Research Fellow from 2008-2010 and moved to Los Alamos National Laboratory as a postdoc fellow from 2010 to 2013. He joined the School of Materials Science and Engineering/State Key Laboratory for Mechanical Behaivor of Materias as a full professor from 2014-2025. He was the Excellent Young Talents Recruited from Oversea (2015) and awarded the Excellent Young Scientist Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2019.
Prof. Han’s primary research interests are the mechanical behavior of metallic structural materials, irradiation effects, and design of high performance advanced structural materials for extreme environments. He has made contributions including proposing the concept of dislocation source efficiency, discovering that the relative mobility of screw versus edge dislocations as a dominant factor governs the ductile-to-brittle transition in body-centered cubic metals, elucidating the critical roles of point-defect complexes on anomalous irradiation hardening and oxygen/helium/hydrogen embrittlement, and revealing interface-mediated mechanisms for tuning the strength-toughness balance and irradiation resistance in metallic materials.
Prof. Han has mentored 7 postdoctoral researchers, 15 PhD students, 35 master's students, and 14 undergraduate students (thesis) since 2014.
