Siew Chong (SC) Tan is a Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering at the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR. Born and raised in Singapore, he received the B.Eng. and M.Eng. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the National University of Singapore, followed by the Ph.D. degree in Electronic and Information Engineering from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
Prior to joining City University of Hong Kong, Prof. Tan spent 12 years at The University of Hong Kong, where he served as a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. During his tenure, he held several key academic leadership roles, including Associate Head of Department, Assistant Dean of Faculty, and Director of the Research Student Centre. Earlier in his career, he was a faculty member at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a Senior Scientist at A*STAR, Singapore. He has also held visiting appointments at the Grainger Center for Electric Machinery and Electromechanics, University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, USA; Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Wuhan, China.
Prof. Tan’s research interests are broad and interdisciplinary, spanning power electronics, LED lighting technology, wireless power transfer, and smart grids. He has published three research monographs and over 300 refereed journal and conference papers, and holds 35 patents. Prof. Tan is a Fellow of the IEEE.
