Life Mentor Scheme

“Life Mentor Scheme” is an important learning activity of two courses run by the City University of Hong Kong, which are gateway education GE2226 " Aging Society: Hong Kong and Beyond" and master counselling course SS5832 "Counselling Older Adults". This scheme allows students to learn more about the elderly’s values and attitudes towards life. Not only could it bridge the generation gap, but also let the participating students get themselves best prepared to cope with work and life in this aging society. At the same time, the elderly also get the chance to interact with the youth through face-to-face communications, as long as they can know much more about the life of the younger generation.

In addition to the funds supported by Mr. David Chow Tak Fung and the University Grants Committee's Matching Grant Scheme, the “Life Mentor Scheme” was also supported by the award money that the scheme founder, Prof. Alice Chong Ming Lin, received in the 2013 UGC Teaching Award issued by the University Grants Committee. The award money helped expand the scheme to three other Universities in 2014-2015 and constituted “Life Mentor Scheme for Generation Me – a Cross-University Collaboration for Student Excellence in An Ageing Society”. The team of the scheme is formed by teachers from different universities and faculties: Dr Vivian Lou Wei Qun, Department of Social Work and Social Administration, the University of Hong Kong; Dr Angela Leung Yee Man, School of Nursing , the University of Hong Kong; Dr. Wallace Chan Chi Ho, Department of Social Work, the Chinese university of Hong Kong; Dr Justina Liu Yat Wa, School of Nursing, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and Ms Rita Lam Yu Kiu, Department of Applied Social Sciences, the City University of Hong Kong.

Meanwhile, the scheme also received Teaching Development Grant from the Office of Education Development and Gateway Education (City University of Hong Kong), and is funded by the Ideal Incubator Scheme by the Office of Provost (City University of Hong Kong).
