Abstract: To aid teachers on Chinese handwriting education and stimulate studentˇ¦s interest, we have established a series of projects using pattern recognition techniques to develop an intelligent tool for analyzing studentsˇ¦ handwritings and providing instant feedback to them. We first analyze the overall appearance of the studentˇ¦s handwriting character using the training data of the expert opinions from some occupational therapists. The potential stroke production errors and stroke sequence errors are identified based on the Hungarian method. We have also been developing a graph matching technique in solving this problem. After the analysis, we will provide feedback to the student by indicating whether and where exactly the handwriting errors are. We have implemented a web-based Chinese handwriting education system as well as some other applications with the pen-based devices for demonstration.
