Abstract: A set of kinematic relations that arise in the theory of the motions of fibre-reinforced fluids is shown to be linked to the integrable modified Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. In particular, it is established that the fibres necessarily constitute generalised tractrices. It is shown how ¡§mutatis mutandis¡¨ the results may be applied to the 2+1-dimensional Lundquist equations of magnetohydrodynamics.
