Abstract: The lecture will be devoted to a presentation of the elementary mathematical theory of hysteresis. Models coming from physics, mechanics, and biology will be introduced and the general concepts of hysteresis operators, which are called hysterons, will be given. The difficulties of the theory lie with the special features of hysterons: Such operators are nonlinear, non-reversible, and non-commutative.

For simplicity, only one dimensional models will be studied, in particular the Duhem problem.

The mathematical theory of hysteresis is a relatively new field with many open problems, regarding the modelling, mathematical analysis, numerical analysis, and numerical simulations.

* Tea, coffee and cookies will be provided at the Faculty Common Room in B6501 before the colloquium from 4:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please come and join us!
