Abstract: The integral equation method is an elegant tool for transforming linear boundary value problems into boundary integral equations. The boundary element method is a flexible discretisation technique for solving these equations numerically. In the last twenty years, efficient algorithms have been developed for overcoming the major bottlenecks of this method:
(a) Quadrature methods for evaluating singular and nearly singular surface integrals;
(b) Sparse representations for the non-local integral operators.
The complexity of these methods are O(N (Log(N)4), where N denotes the number of unknowns.
In this talk, we will present new quadrature and multipole methods that allow to solve these equations within linear complexity O(N).
