Abstract: In the last two decades, researchers have applied advanced computer based statistical techniquesto the problem of "beating the races". The speaker will describe the theoretical and practical aspects of creating an empirically derived mathematical model to estimate the winning probabilities for horse racing as currently offered at race tracks around the world. The use of these probability estimates to implement an optimal wagering strategy will also be addressed. The speaker will report on the results of over 15 years of practical experience with such systems.

(Tea, coffee and cookies will be provided at the Faculty Common Room in B6501 before the colloquium from 4:00 to 4:30 pm. Please come and join us!)
