偏光（polarization）是光學現象的一種，其應用無處不在：從太陽眼鏡，到立體3D影院，甚至電視、電腦螢幕、手機。 偏光的濾光作用可以把影像隱藏，又可以將白光分散成七彩顏色，是創作視覺藝術的魔法工具。本工作坊將簡單介紹幾種偏光原理，並與學員動手製作光影藝術作品。

During the pandemic, when face-to-face teaching is either ineffective or impossible, DIVE is a virtual learning environment at CityU that aims to help students dive into various discovery-enriched curriculums with interactive teaching materials. Workshop participants will access the environment in a web browser with their google/GitHub account and learn to re-create the environment by running a container locally or remotely. In addition to university-level courses, interactive teaching materials suitable for HKDSE ICT and Math will also be available.

“Why are we doing this?” is perhaps one of the most commonly heard questions in math lessons. In this talk, we take one step further from mathematics in secondary school and introduce the basic ideas of machine learning and decision-making, which have many applications in real-life problems. Thanks to the developments in technology, solving math problems using computer programming becomes more and more intuitive, and we will demonstrate how to solve these problems using modern computing tools.

In order to avoid the potentially catastrophic consequences caused by climate change, global warming needs to be suppressed to less than 1.5 degree of temperature rise. Greenhouse gas emissions should be peaked by 2030. Hundreds of cities worldwide have established low carbon or net-zero carbon goals to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the coming years and decades. In this session, Dr. Yun Hau Ng will report global and Hong Kong efforts in curbing the greenhouse gas emission by promoting or launching large scale deployment of clean energy. The sharing will cover the uses of tailored clean energy in the city-grade clean energy grid (power plants), transportation, factories, water, green infrastructure and waste management systems. The challenges and limitations for the development of emerging clean energy method will be discussed.

This online event will include 1) an introduction of what a corpus is and why it is useful for language teaching; 2) a workshop of how to use popular online English corpora with step-by-step instructions; 3) an interactive open discussion with audiences on potential issues of teaching English with corpora in secondary-school classrooms in Hong Kong.

Network science is an academic field that studies complex networks such as telecommunication networks, computer networks, biological networks, cognitive and semantic networks and social networks. In recent years, the increased interconnectivity of the mathematical sciences community has led to an increase in joint work from different fields. This talk will give a brief introduction on the recent development of mathematics in the development of network science. The speaker will identify various priority themes where multidisciplinary corporation will have greatest impact in technology, business and industry innovations.
