Our Research for the Betterment of Society

Dear Colleagues,

Our 2020–2025 Strategic Plan titled World-class Research and Education underscores our determination to continue our remarkable trajectory of success in both areas, a key role expected of top universities.

Universities should lead the change and we are dedicated to excellence in translational research for the betterment of society. Our University is home to notable scholars in various disciplines from around the world. Among the many awards and honours, I am pleased to share with you three that CityU received in October.

Professor Wang Zuankai in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE) won the 2020 Xplorer Prize organised by the Tencent Foundation for his fundamental research on harvesting energy from water as well as his nature-inspired engineering.

Another exciting development that I am pleased to report is related to the mega projects at our Futian Research Institute, which sits on the Hong Kong/Shenzhen border. The Institute is currently home to two cooperative projects, with approved funding of over HK$100 million in total. This is also the first time that a Hong Kong institution has secured such large-scale projects.

Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President (Research and Technology), leads the project on advanced materials and additive manufacturing with a focus on pre-stress engineering and nanotechnology of advanced materials for aerospace applications. The team, including Professor Liu Chain-tsuan, University Distinguished Professor, plans to study the applications and industrialisation of novel metallic and nano-structured materials, contributing to the development of aircraft and aerospace industries.

Professor Chen Fu-rong, Chair Professor in MSE, leads the other project, which will initially focus on the development of key components for high space/time-resolved transmission electron microscopy. Professor Chen and his team plan to develop a world-leading electro-optical design and manufacturing centre in the Greater Bay Area, leading to breakthroughs in quantum devices, future energy, life sciences and medicine.

The effort of every member of our community has helped CityU to become what it is today. Congratulations to our faculty and staff for all their great work, and we are pleased to start the 2020–25 Strategic Plan with these exciting joint efforts by our faculty!

Way Kuo
President and University Distinguished Professor
