Photonic Quantum Simulators – From Quantum Optics to Condensed Matter Physics

ABSTRACT

In recent years, it has been demonstrated that there are several exciting opportunities for the simulation of quantum phase transitions using both ultra-cold atoms confined in optical lattices, and entangled photons in photonic quantum walks. In this talk, I will present recent progress towards the construction of a new laboratory for ultra-cold atoms at MIT, an effort which is expected to be of great relevance for the simulation of correlated quantum phases and exotic forms of quantum magnetism. In addition, I will present an overview of recent work developed at the University of Oxford and the Institute of Photonic Science (ICFO, Barcelona) towards the development of photonic quantum sources and quantum detectors, for applications in photonic quantum simulation, quantum information processing, and quantum sensors.

BIOGRAPHY

Dr Graciana Puentes holds a PhD (Summa Cum Laude) from Leiden University (NL). Her thesis examined quantum scattering phenomena in photonic systems. Upon graduation, she was appointed as Research Fellow at University of Oxford (UK), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (US), and the Institute of Photonic Science (ICFO, Barcelona). She was an Oxford Trinity College Fellow, a Marie-Curie COFUND Fellow, and an ICFONest Fellow. Currently she is a permanent member of the Editorial Board of Nature Scientific Reports. Since 2014 she holds an Independent Senior Researcher position at the National Research Council (Argentina). Her research interests focus on quantum photonics and quantum simulation. Her research work is documented in over 33 publications in top scientific journals, 3 patents, 2 book chapters, and more than 30 conference proceedings. She has nearly 1000 citations and an h-index=19.
