MSE and PHY Joint Seminar: Metasurfaces for controlling electromagnetic waves

ABSTRACT

Metasurfaces, ultrathin metamaterials composed by array of planar “meta-atoms” with pre-designed electromagnetic (EM) properties, have attracted extensive attention recently. Many fascinating wave-manipulation effects have been discovered based on metasurfaces, such as anomalous reflection/refraction of light, perfect coupling between propagating waves and surface waves, meta-lenses and meta-holograms. Here, I will summarize some of our recent works in this field. In particular, I will discuss how to use metasurfaces to excite and control the wave-fronts of surface plasmons simultaneously and efficiently, how to efficiently control the spin and wave-front of light simultaneously to generate the desired vectorial light beams, and how to control the angular dispersions of metasurfaces. Finally, I will describe our recent efforts on deriving a complete and rigorous theoretical framework from first principles (i.e., Maxwell’s equations), with all needed parameters directly computable from the electromagnetic (EM) responses of involved plasmonic resonators, to understand the rich coupling-induced physics in complex plasmonic open systems.

Zhou, Lei received his PhD in Physics from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, in 1997. He then went to Institute for Material Research in Tohoku University (Sendai, Japan) for postdoctoral research. In 2000 - 2004, he was a visiting scholar in Physics Department of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He joined Physics Department of Fudan University in 2004 as a professor, and became a “Xi-De" Chair Professor since 2013. Starting from 1993, Professor Lei Zhou has been working in the fields of magnetism, meta-materials, photonic crystals and plasmonics, and he has published over 160 papers in scientific journals including Nature Materials, Phys. Rev. X, Phys. Rev. Lett., Nano Lett., Light: Sci. & Appl., etc. He is the co-author of a monograph (Springer) and 3 book chapters. He served as general co-chairs for several international conferences (including the 5th International Conference on Nanophotonics (2011) and the 8th Multidisciplinary Conference on Optofluidics (2018)), initiated the China-Japan-Korea (A3) metamaterials forum series, and severed as program committee members or session chairs in many top international conferences. He has delivered over 100 plenary/keynote/invited talks in many top international conferences. He got the NSFC "Grant for Outstanding Young Scientist" in 2007, was entitled "Chang Jiang Scholars Program" Chair Professor in 2009, won the “OSA Young Scientist Award” in 2016, recognized as an “APS Outstanding referee” in 2017, and was selected as OSA fellow in 2019.
