ABSTRACT
Disordered solids are abundant in daily life, for example, glasses, plastics, and concretes. Many disordered solids exhibit brittle failure under mechanical load, which hinders their further applications. Microscopically, external stress triggers microscopic plastic deformations in disordered solids, and the material fails brittlely when plastically deformed regions aggregate and form shear bands. We try to understand this process by studying the interplay between microscopic structure, strain field, and plasticity in four different experimental and simulational disordered solids. Understanding this interplay allows us to build a model that correctly predicts whether or not shear bands form.
BIOGRAPHY
Dr. ZHANG Ge is a postdoc with Prof. Andrea Liu in Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Pennsylvania since 2017, studying disordered solids using computational models. Before that, he earned his Ph. D. in Princeton University working on computational statistical physics, including packing problems and disordered classical ground states.
