“The secret of success in a research journey is curiosity and passion. In the past 20 years, our research team built a research program in the interaction of children, youth and media. It contributes to the understanding of social psychology and media effect. The first milestone was the securement of a government grant on “Children and Consumers”.
Professor James U. McNeal, our collaborative researcher, shared with me inside stories of publishing and gave me many good advices. The unexpected school break for the SARS outbreak gave us time to prepare the first book manuscript “Advertising to Children in China”. It also triggers us to continue the line of enquiry to the study of youth and consumption.
The second milestone was a visiting fellowship opportunity supported by Hong Kong Baptist University to get in touch with like-mind researchers at Copenhagen Business School and Aarhus University. A prolific program with scholars from Denmark on the tween girl study and studies promoting healthy eating among adolescents was established.
The third milestone was my appointment to serve as the convener of a working group on Environment, Health and Sustainability of the David C. Lam Institute for East-West Studies. I revitalize my research interest in environment and health issues. I was blessed to have opportunities to work with many talented persons in my academic life. Dr. Anna Hui of City University of Hong Kong invited me to join her team on researching creativity. A happy surprise was the hiring of Mr. Ng Yu Leung, a psychology graduate of City University of Hong Kong, as our research assistant. He is such an intelligent and hard-working young man that pushed our research program forward.
Over the years our research team published over 120 journal articles and book chapters, edited/authored five books, and produced 14 episodes of teaching videos. Four journal articles received Emerald Literati Network Awards. I am grateful to City University of Hong Kong for preparing me to be a visible researcher." (Nov 2013)

Facebook
Facebook, just like CityU, provides an open environment for thinking creatively and thinking big.
My PhD research experiences help me as a Software Engineer and Machine Learning specialist at Facebook. There are always new things to learn, but the process is always the same underlying engineering principles: identify and understand a problem, learn what has already been done, think about new ways to solve the problem, come up with an idea, try, evaluate and iterate.
The skillset lies in iterating fast and finding good solutions, something I started learning during my PhD in Machine Learning at CityU." (Feb 2018)

Dr. TO Christopher
Master of Arts in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution (1996)
School of Law, CityU
Consultant on Arbitration and Dispute Resolution
“I embarked on three courses of study at CityU’s School of Law. My main reason for doing so is that the Lecturers are extremely helpful and willing to go out of their way to assist you in grasping the fundamental concepts of each subject thus making studying a pleasure. Although the Bachelor of Laws programme was theoretical in nature which gave one a grounding on the various aspects of Law (which is essential), the other two programmes of study (Postgraduate Certificate in Laws [PCLL] and Master of Arts in Arbitration and Dispute Resolution [MA)] were more practical.
The structure and contents of these programmes (PCLL and MA) are geared towards those who want to apply theory into actual practice with the twist that you can actually make a difference in reality.
With society being more argumentative and people striving for fairness, having the skills sets of dispute resolution as taught in the MA programme not only enhances one’s knowledge but could lead towards using such knowledge for the betterment of our society as a whole. What makes this programme unique is that the lecturers are all experience practitioners in their respective fields who have had substantial experience in the use of Arbitration and other forms of Dispute Resolution, not to mention they are highly regarded within the industry. Their lectures are very interactive whereby they will use scenarios derived from actual cases to stimulate students understanding of the subject. This not only provides students with fruit for thought, it actually allows students to grasp the fundamental aspects while visualising how one can apply the skills learnt in class into actually practice.
Another aspect of this programme which deserves a mention is that all the students are working in different fields and attend classes in the evenings and weekends, nevertheless they each bring a different aspect to the learning process which helps to stimulate learning through participation. If you want to help yourself and others at the same time, this programme and its learning outcomes would be highly useful for your self-development and enhancement. Whereas the PCLL programme helps those who want to qualify to practice law. In fact the skills learned in the PCLL programme definitely assist you in preparing for the real world thus making you a well informed and practical lawyer that is a real asset to society.
Having the right skills and mind set are crucial in pursuing a career in Law and these core elements are taught by dedicated and experienced practitioners at the University. City University of Hong Kong is without doubt your ideal partner in achieving your aspirations, as it did assist me in achieving my aspiration.
Further to my studies in CityU, I managed to obtain a PhD in Laws at Stirling University and was honored with a DEng at Glasgow Caledonian University, as well as being listed within the Who’s Who of Arbitrators and Mediators globally signifying one’s leading position within the dispute resolution arena, a skill I obtained through embarking on the MA programme at CityU.” (Dec 2016)

“I always appreciate for the opportunity to study at the SEEM of CityU for my PhD starting at 2012, where I received guidance from many excellent academics and established good contacts with many outstanding schoolmates who now also have positions in world-leading universities. Thanks for this experience, I am now collaborating with these scholars in co-supervising students and applying for funds.
Though SEEM is an engineering oriented department, my PhD research focused on the reliability analysis and optimization of various types of complex system arising from industrial applications, especially the networked and degraded control systems, smart grids, and critical infrastructure systems. Thanks to the normative and extensive mathematical training from my supervisor and the engineering background of SEEM, I had been equipped with the solid theoretical knowledge and rich experience about the real applications of mechanical and automation engineering.
The SGS also supported me to conduct my research work at oversea academic institutions and attend international conferences. Coincidentally, I obtained my first academic job as a research associate from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), because the professor from ETHZ listened to my conference presentation and was impressed by the novelty of my PhD work. During my research period at ETHZ, some of my peer-review papers which appear in good international journals are the continuations of my research work at CityU.
I was offered a lecturer position at the SEIT, UNSW at 2018, which was not only because of my good research outputs, but also much benefited from my academic network developed through my CityU study. All the above-mentioned progresses in my academic career would not be made possible without my first solid and important step at CityU. I am proud of being a PhD graduate of CityU and looking forward to hearing more good news of CityU both locally and internationally, and collaborating more in the research, supervise and fund.” (Jun 2019)
