Contrary to the impressions one might get from following sensationalist press reports, Hong Kong in general and CityU in particular is an extremely attractive place to live and work. Remuneration is extremely competitive, academic and civic freedoms are well respected, funding for research is significantly easier to come by than in Europe and America . So please do not be put off by press reports about civil unrest in HK, and bear in mind that both the mass media and a number of powerful geopolitical players have their own unhealthy reasons for greatly exaggerating the supposed "tensions" and "restrictions" and "threats" that Hong Kongers supposedly live under. These scare stories do not reflect the quality of life in Hong Kong, which remains extremely high compared to almost anywhere on the planet, and offers fantastic opportunities for creativity and expression and personal growth. Please feel encouraged to reach out to existing academic staff at our department and ask them about their experiences of life in Hong Kong. Our staff members come from very diverse cultural and national backgrounds , and you will find that they will be very happy to openly answer any questions you may have about what life in Hong Kong is really like.
