On 27th, March, CityU students excelled once again in the 6th Intervarsity Putonghua Recitation Contest.
Today, in the first ever open forum for staff by a serving Council Chairman, Sir Gordon Wu laid out his plans for the University over the next few years: to situate the new Community College on campus, to map out a campus development plan to meet future growth of student numbers, and to improve management and staff interaction and co-operation.
At the fourth annual French Award Presentation Ceremony, 24 April, 15 students received scholarships and sponsorships from CityU's Division of Language Studies, the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and the Université de Bourgogone.
Three hundred students and guests applauded the slogan "Reading for fun, I'll do it", at the Opening Ceremony of "World Book Day" and "2004 Hong Kong Reading Month" on 23 April at CityU's University Circle. The Ceremony was co-organized by CityU, RTHK Radio 1, the Hong Kong Publishing Federation, Hong Kong Education City, The Hong Kong Association of Youth Groups, and Hong Kong Public Libraries (Leisure and Cultural Services Department).
About 60 staff turned out at the Staff Association forum on the new salary proposals. Familiar faces abounded at the occasion, voicing an array of usual concerns ranging from the necessity and effectiveness of the proposals to the level of staff morale at the University.
How can Hong Kong enhance its appeal to tourists? By re-vamping its cultural heritage sites, or by exploring new attractions? The first batch of Associate Degree students majoring in Leisure and Tourism Management presented how to market Hong Kong as a tourist attraction at the final year project exhibition, 21-23 April.
On 20 April 2004, Professor H K Chang, University President, together with CityU's Deputy President and two vice-presidents, met with 17 student representatives, led by Mr Kelvin Chan, President of the Students' Union, to exchange views on the issue of "deep collaboration" between CityU and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU).
Announced on 5 January 2004, a team of students from the School of Law (SLW) was among the 28 teams from around the world selected to participate in the English-speaking session of the prestigious Jean-Pictet Competition, 10-17 April, in Méjannes-le-Clap, France. This year, there were 79 applications. The CityU team, comprising LLB students Beverly Koo, Yvonne Pang and Nicky Sai Hang Tse, were the first from China to take part in the Competition.
Dear Colleagues, At the end of March, I led a CityU delegation to Shanghai. The visit came in response to an invitation extended to us in 2002 from Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). It was delayed due to SARS and other circumstances last year. The trip proved to be both inspiring and sobering.
Will the new salary scales and pay-raise system be an effective way to tackle the University's budget deficit? Is the pay-raise mechanism acceptable to existing staff? These were some of the questions raised by the more than 100 staff members who attended the open forum on these issues. The forum, held 14 April, was organized by the Human Resources Office.
