Reading Acrobat Documents on the Web

by Peter Mok

It has become common practice for Web content providers to put up Acrobat documents as reference since it allows better page layouts and formats, especially for long documents with chapters, sections or graphics. However, Acrobat documents are version dependent. We have been alerted by the Help Desk about users having difficulties in viewing them on the Web. Below is a description of some of the causes and our recommendations for best viewing these documents.

Install the latest version - the Acrobat Reader is a freeware and the latest version (5.05) can be obtained from the Intranet menu under "Software Tools and Utilities". Older versions (e.g. version 4.x) will have compatibility problems with documents prepared by more advanced versions of Acrobat Writer.

Install Chinese Support for Acrobat - to read Chinese text in Acrobat documents, please install both the Simplified and the Traditional Chinese support. Both options are also available under the "Software Tools and Utilities" menu on the Intranet. Please note that you need to install Acrobat Reader version 5 first before you can install them.

Printing Acrobat Documents - Acrobat Reader version 5 has resolved all known printing problems of all previous versions. If you want to print Acrobat Documents within a browser, do not use the "Print" option in the browser but use the "Print" button provided by the Acrobat browser plug-in instead.
