Research Assistant (Full-time/Part-time) in the Department of English (Appointment for about 8 to 9 months) [Ref. B/R/980/09]

 

Project

Embodied English as Interactional Competence: A Multimodal Corpus Study of Gestures in L2 Group Interaction

Duties

The candidate will assist a research team studying Chinese students’ English language multimodally.  Duties will revolve around the collection, transcription, and analysis of interactive communication data, primarily from paired conversations and group interactions between students learning/practicing English for Academic and/or Specific Purposes.  S/he would also assist other aspects of the research, such as preparing written and spoken reports as well as other materials based on the results.

Requirements

1.   The successful candidates should possess a Master’s degree in Applied Linguistics or related subjects, and no more than a total of 6 years of service at the University.
2.   Knowledge and experience in one or more of the following areas of research are required:

    • Multimodal data transcription and analysis (quantitative/qualitative)
    • Testing and assessment of English language speaking activities, especially paired conversation/group interaction (as on Cambridge B2 First, CET-SET, HKDSE, etc.)
    • Interactional competence, interactive communication, interactional language functions
    • English for Academic/Specific Purposes
    • Studies of gesture/multimodal interaction/embodied cognition
    • Second language acquisition/development
    • Language teaching

3.   Other academic skills are highly desirable:

    • Preparing written and spoken reports
    • Creating teaching and assessment materials
    • Communicating about research with specialists and non-specialists

4.   Candidates should also possess:

    • Excellent interpersonal communication and work ethic
    • Good organizational skills and time management, skills to coordinate work with part-time assistants
    • High level of enthusiasm and motivation for the Project
    • Genuine interest in the questions explored by the research

Salary and Conditions of Service

Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  For full-time appointment, fringe benefits include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.
