Research Assistant in the Centre for Applied One Health Research and Policy Advice (Around 10 months) [Ref. C/R/521/09]


Unearth the forgotten cetaceans in Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area

The Project aims to gather and document all the cetacean specimens scattered in temples and other locations in Hong Kong and Macau. Using morphological and molecular methods, cetacean specimens will be identified and incorporated into official stranding record for future studies and reference. Ecological and cultural knowledge of cetaceans, the local fishermen communities and other research findings will be consolidated into a documentary film, bringing the ancient bones in temples to the public eye to advocate awareness of marine ecology and conservation.


Assist in the overall project logistics arrangements, virtopsy, 3D surface scanning and conventional necropsy; assist in laboratory research works; assist in cetacean stranding response programme such as handling, logistic and record-keeping; communicate with and interview the local temple and fisherman community; liaise and coordinate with other team members, departments and collaborators; assist in data collection, review and analysis; provide support for science and management needs; assist in writing scientific manuscript and organising research activities; prepare and deliver presentations for stakeholder meetings, outreach activities and biological opinions; perform any other duties as assigned.


A Master’s/Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary/Biomedical Science/Molecular Biology/Biology/Wildlife Ecology/Quantitative Ecology/Animal Science or a related discipline, and no more than 6 years of service at the University. Prior experience in marine conservation, stranding works, laboratory works and mobile application are advantages. Applicants should have the ability to do presentations for a variety of audiences including technical, scientific, and the general public; experience in publishing scientific research; ability to work in a diversified environment; ability to work independently in a mature manner and maintain a calm demeanor in potentially stressful conditions; comfortable handling animal carcasses; good record keeping; time management and organisational skills; attention to details; willing to learn and acquire new skills; ability to face the camera or in front of a live audience comfortably; ability to adapt to an ever-changing work environment. Good written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua) would be an advantage. Occasional night duties or work on weekends/holidays may be required.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.
