IT Engineer/IT Officer in the Computing Services Centre [Ref. D/288/09]

 

The Computing Services Centre (CSC) at City University of Hong Kong manages the University's Information Technology infrastructure and services covering Data Centre Operations, Cloud and System Hosting, Research Computing and High-Performance Computing, Communication and Networking, Workspace and Audio-Visual Technologies, and other related IT functions to support the University's operations. The Centre has about 110 staff and contractors currently.

Duties

  1. Install, configure and maintain Solaris UNIX and LINUX operating systems, analyse and resolve problems for the systems (including both software and hardware platforms);
  2. Work with the data centre team on the monitoring and regular maintenance of the Solaris UNIX and LINUX related infrastructure;
  3. Set up and maintain Solaris UNIX and LINUX user accounts and access management systems, responding to user requests and software errors;
  4. Work with the Senior Scientific Officer in managing the High-Performance Computing (HPC) Research Computing services, provide technical assistance and consultation on the use of the HPC platforms, and perform system performance analysis and benchmarks;
  5. Keep abreast of the latest Solaris UNIX, LINUX and HPC related technologies and development by attending relevant global conferences; and
  6. Perform any other duties as assigned.


Requirements

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Physics/Biology or related disciplines, with at least 5 years’ post-qualification working experience;
  2. Experience in configuring Solaris UNIX and LINUX security baseline using CIS benchmarks;
  3. Good knowledge of the Solaris UNIX and LINUX account lifecycle management, operating systems, storage environments, file systems, and network protocols;
  4. Linux shell skills and scripting languages (e.g. csh, Bash, Awk, perl, and Python);
  5. Knowledge of networking and storage principles (including routing, subnets, TCP/IP, VLANs, NFS, etc.);
  6. Effective management of multiple projects concurrently while maintaining a keen eye for details;
  7. Willingness to communicate with users in different disciplines;
  8. Proactive, eager to learn and well-organized with a strong sense of responsibility;
  9. Strong analytical, good interpersonal and communication skills;
  10. Adaptability to change, ability to work independently and as a team and under pressure; and
  11. Good command of written and spoken English and Chinese are required.


Candidates with less experience will be considered as IT Officer.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
