Scientific Officer in the Department of Infectious Diseases and Public Health (Appointment for 12 months) [Ref. C/R/384/09]

 

Duties

The appointee will be responsible for coordinating and conducting the STEM Laboratory’s research activities focused on LC-MS based metabolomics in animals, delivering written reports for scientific communication of research findings, and conducting school visits as part of the STEM Laboratory’s outreach activities.  Main duties include to:

  1. Serve as a project manager, providing scientific and technical leadership as well as supervision of research staff concerned;
  2. Perform experiments, draft proposals and manuscripts, mentor students in projects and research;
  3. Assist the core members of the STEM Laboratory in research related matters such as data analysis of LC-MS based metabolomics data, preparation and submission of manuscripts and grant proposals;
  4. Conduct outreach programmes for high-school students interested in STEM curriculum choices;
  5. Organize laboratory meetings, seminars and conferences as needed;
  6. Provide administrative support, such as filing animal ethics approval requests and risk analysis reports as needed;
  7. Conduct off-campus field trips for sample collection as needed; and
  8. Perform any other duties as assigned.


Requirements

  1. A PhD degree in Molecular Biology/Biomedical Sciences/Animal Science/Biochemistry/ Biology or a related discipline, with relevant experience;
  2. Good understanding of LC-MS based metabolomics workflow, confident use of relevant data analysis techniques such as multivariate statistical methods in R, and experience in the biological interpretation of metabolic profile alterations;
  3. Proven track record of success in scientific research (as evidenced by first-authored publications in reputable scientific journals); and
  4. Good command of written and spoken English for science, strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work independently, being self-motivated and a good team player.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Salary offered will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Fringe benefits include leave, medical and dental consultations at the campus clinic.
