Clinical Veterinarian in the Laboratory Animal Research Unit [Ref. C/791/09]

 

Duties

Responsible for the animal health and welfare issues of the research animals, monitoring of users’ animal surgery and training.  Other major duties include:

  1. Provide clinical care for research animals in the animal facility;
  2. Investigate animal welfare issue including overcrowding, injury and post-surgery care and assign technical staff to take further actions if necessary;
  3. Provide regular animal training to users including surgery, drug administration, blood collection, euthanasia, and anesthesia of small animals (i.e., rodent and rabbit) and surgery monitoring;
  4. Provide health inspection training to technical staff;
  5. Be responsible for ethical issues and clearance related to animal research in the capacity of Animal Ethics Sub-Committee Members;
  6. Assist the post-approval monitoring of animal studies on campus;
  7. Ensure the safety of animal users engaged in the use of chemicals and drugs by regular safety inspection;
  8. Prepare the necessary documents for AAALAC accreditation; and
  9. Perform any other duties as assigned by Director and his delegates.

 

Working on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays and under emergency conditions will be required.

Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine or equivalent, with at least 10 years’ experience in laboratory animal science and medicine.  Candidates shall be registered veterinary surgeons with valid practising certificate of the Veterinary Surgeons Board (VSB) of Hong Kong.  Familiarity with various kinds of surgically-induced disease model in rodent and rabbit; good knowledge of international standards of animal care, post-surgical care, animal ethics, various animal surgery techniques and safety use of chemical in animal-related experiment are required.  Knowledge of and experience in the AAALAC accreditation system will be advantageous.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
