Senior Safety Officer (Laboratory) in the Office of Vice-President (Research & Technology) [Ref. B/519/09]

 

Duties

Laboratory Safety Unit (LSU) is a central university unit under the OVPRT to oversee safety and regulatory compliance issues related to teaching and research activities in laboratories. The appointee will assist the Senior Laboratory Safety Manager in discharging the job duties in relation to projects, programmes and services under LSU. Main duties include to:

  1. Assist in managing the operation of online systems and updating the inventory databases of laboratory assets;
  2. Perform regular inspections and compliance checks in the laboratories to ensure that activities are in compliance with legislations, policies and procedures (both internal and external);
  3. Assist in the implementation of the laboratory safety management programmes to mitigate the risk, such as conduct on-site monitoring and hazard assessments, provide safety advice, make recommendations on appropriate control measures and carry out accident/incident investigations;
  4. Provide administrative, clerical and daily operation supports in the unit;
  5. Conduct laboratory design review and pre-occupation safety check;
  6. Prepare timely reports and follow up remedial actions when necessary;
  7. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders on laboratory safety-related issues;
  8. Provide technical supports to LSU laboratory service technical team; and
  9. Perform any other duties as assigned.



Requirements

A Bachelor’s degree in Biology/Biochemistry/Chemistry/Occupational Hygiene or related disciplines with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant working experience or a Master’s degree in related disciplines with a minimum of 3 years’ relevant working experience.

Applicants should have a good command of both written and spoken English and Chinese (including Putonghua); good communication and interpersonal skills; strong quantitative, computer (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and analytical skills.

Preference will be given to candidates with relevant training certificate of laboratory safety associated courses (e.g. certificate in radiation protection, laser safety, safe use of x-ray, etc.) and experience in a safety unit of tertiary institution with laboratory facilities.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited for a written test.

Successful candidate will be required to attend training related to laboratory safety and risk management, where appropriate.

Salary and Conditions of Service

Remuneration package will be highly competitive, commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Appointment will be made on a fixed-term contract; fringe benefits include gratuity, leave, medical and dental schemes.
