HKIDS Funded Research Projects

HKIDS is pleased to announce two new initiatives – the HKIDS Early Career Research Grants (ECRG) and Applied Research Grants (ARG). The HKIDS ECRGs aim to encourage young faculty members to conduct project-based collaborative research to solve data-science challenges that will highly likely lead to extramural grants. The HKIDS ARG aims to promote applied research initiatives and to foster HKIDS-industry links by supporting proof of concept (PoC) or feasibility study projects.
The details of the call for proposals are described below:

Early Career Research Grants (ECRG)

Young SDSC faculty members (i.e., assistant professors).  SDSC faculty members should be the principal investigator, while faculty from SDSC and other departments can serve as Co-PI for interdisciplinary collaboration. It is preferred to have one Co-PI who can contribute and help the young PI thrive. Prior contributions to HKIDS, such as extramural grants through HKIDS and active involvement in HKIDS’s outreaching activities will receive favorable considerations.
Priority will be given to first-time grantees of HKIDS.

Application areas of ECRG

  1. Bioinformatics & health science
  2. Financial and Business analytics
  3. Urban computing and Smart Cities
  4. Carbon neutrality and sustainability
  5. Image processing and NLP
  6. Predictive health maintenance
  7. Smart manufacturing
  8. Machine learning theory and algorithms
  9. Semantic and interpretable AI
  10. Other important areas in line with data science and AI

HKIDS ARG are ongoing

The HKIDS Applied Research Grant (ARG) aims to promote applied research initiatives and to foster HKIDS-industry links by supporting proof of concept (PoC) or feasibility study projects with potential for application or commercialization of resulting output to the community and industry.  Impactful industrial contributions are necessary, which requires highly reputable industrial leaders to initiate the projects.  ARG provides matching fund to promote the PoC or feasibility studies. HKIDS will lead in the initial discussions and negotiations with potential and eligible industrial partners.
Applications are invited by HKIDS when a match between a committed industrial partner and a potential PI, who is the member of HKIDS, is found.
The maximum funding for each approved application is HK$250,000 and the duration is up to 12 months. Applicants should not hold more than one ongoing ARG project at the time of application. Recipients of ARG projects are required to apply for ITF or equivalent extramural applied research grants through HKIDS during or within 1 year from the completion of the ARG projects.
