Full Story
Professor Iu Ting-kwok is a practising solicitor with over 33 years of experience. Since April 2010, Professor Iu has been in active mediation practice in addition to his legal practice. He is known to be one of the busiest mediators in Hong Kong.
Professor Iu’s practice is well recognised in Hong Kong and beyond. He has been listed by Doyle’s Guide from 2021 to 2025 as a leading family law mediator in Hong Kong. Lexology has ranked him as a “Commercial Mediation Thought Leader in Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR 2025”. He has recently been appointed as a GBA Mediator too.
Professor Iu is one of the very first mediators taking part in Mediator-Assisted Financial Dispute Resolution hearings at the High Court and the Family Court. He is also the first mediator appointed to attend the first Mediator-Assisted Case Settlement Conference of the District Court.
As a seasoned mediator, Professor Iu understands the importance of giving back, and he is keen to serve in different ways, namely, by public services, teaching, and donations.
Between 2013 and 2017, he advised the Department of Justice of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (the Government of the HKSAR) on the enactment of the apology legislation. The Apology Ordinance was enacted on 1 December 2017. In 2017, Professor Iu was awarded a Medal of Honour by the Government of the HKSAR in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of mediation. At present, Professor Iu is a member of the Expert Advisory Group on Legal and Dispute Resolution Services and the Working Group on Mediation Regulatory System, both chaired by the Secretary of Justice.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Professor Iu is passionate about education and nurturing leaders of tomorrow. He has held academic appointments at several renowned local universities, including serving as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Law of CityUHK. In the midst of his tight schedules, he is still willing to share the skills and knowledge of dispute resolution with CityUHK students and staff, and he teaches mediation/negotiation regularly at CityUHK. He also runs training courses so that people from all walks of life may learn how to avoid and/or resolve disputes in a more peaceful but at the same time less costly manner. Professor Iu writes extensively. He is one of the co-authors of “Hong Kong Mediation Manual (3rd Edition)”. He also publishes legal/mediation articles and journals with his former CityUHK students such as Professor Andy CY Kwok and Ms Tracy Chu.
Professor Iu’s gratitude to his alma mater is reflected in his steadfast support since his graduation from CityUHK in 2004. Over the past two decades, he has established scholarships to cultivate the next generation of mediation professionals. In 2024, he further demonstrated his commitment by supporting the CityUHK Endowment Campaign, establishing endowed scholarships to create a lasting and meaningful impact for future generations. Professor Iu encourages young people not only to pursue academic excellence but also to embrace a spirit of service and perseverance, using their talents to give back to the community.
Professor Iu’s generosity and vision are shaping the future of CityUHK and its students. We invite you to join him in empowering more talented students to access transformative opportunities and realise their full potential!
