You could almost tell from the name the responsibilities of the CSC Management Committee - a committee, though not involved in the day-to-day management of the Centre, advises CSC on its strategic planning and various management issues - the big boss of CSC.

As a matter of fact, the Committee does not have a long history. In line with the decentralization movement and a collegial management approach being adopted in the recent years, it had been established, among the other Management Committees for the other service centres, only since April 1993. In consistent with the bicameral system of the University, it is set up as a standing committee under the Senate and the Management Board (MB).

The Committee advises on one hand the Senate and the MB on policy matters of CSC that affect the academic work and the administration of the University respectively, and on the other hand the Director of Computing Services on the requirements of users for facilities and services. Moreover, it serves as a communication channel between the Centre and its users for information on its current and projected facilities and services.

The Committee is constituted of academic staff from Faculties and College, administrative staff from central offices and supporting centres, as well as student representatives nominated by the Students' Union. It is hoped that the diversified membership could enable the Committee to discuss issues in a most fair and impartial manner where interests of different parties could be taken account of. The chairman of the Committee is nominated by the Management Board and appointed by the Senate, and being in such capacity he would consequently become the line manager of the CSC.

Currently, proposals of the CSC on its major developments, significant purchases and annual budget would be submitted to the CSC Management Committee for endorsement or approval, as appropriate. The Committee normally meets on a quarterly basis. Should staff and students of the University like to include any issue for the discussion of the CSC Management Committee, they could raise it through one of the Committee members to do so.
