From Polytechnic to University

Horizontal Rule [MAR 95]

The change from City Polytechnic to City University brought about numerous changes to computer systems. The Computer Centre changed two main areas, the network and the user interface.

A) Network Changes

E-Mail address changes affected network operating systems as follows:

The campus-wide domain name server has also changed from cphk.hk to cityu.edu.hk. This means that if a user does not provide a domain name when looking up the name server on any host, cityu.edu.hk will automatically be added to the user-supplied hostname. All off-campus E-Mail message headers now show City University of Hong Kong as the Organisation Name.

These changes are shown below in a partial sample of an E-Mail transmission header.

As City University is on the Internet, network messages enable us to effectively publicise our University status worldwide. We sent over sixty messages regarding the name and E-Mail address changes on the Internet through education-related bulletin boards, Listserv, and Newsgroups.

B) User-interface Changes

Although user-interface changes affected mostly the names of services, they demanded a substantial effort from staff. All public information services systems accessible from off-campus by either modem or Internet were changed. The poly in PolyLink now stands for multiple links rather than polytechnic links. All other names prefixed by "Polytechnic" or "Poly" have been renamed as follows:

Old NameCurrent Name
Polytechnic Library
Information Systems
University Library
Information Systems
Poly Yellow PagesUniversity Yellow Pages
PolyDataCityData
PolyFaxCityFax

System message prompts and report headings were also modified. Static messages in the Bulletin Board System in PolyLink were edited, as was information in our Gopher and World Wide Web information servers. To reflect the name change, our integrated campus network CPNET has changed to CTNET. Accordingly, we also modified and recompiled Network Menu displays and options. In addition to the MSDOS environment, we needed to change Windows applications such as network Windows' icon descriptions. As a support centre, the CC develops and produces on-line manual pages for different systems and publishes reference material. These include systems and software user guides, information leaflets and booklets, service request forms, and so on. These will continue to be edited as we update material.
