Major Allocation (for 2018-19 intake)

Students admitted to the normative 4-year degree will be allocated a specific major programme offered by the department after completion of the first-year study.

Major option:
BA Media and Communication (BAMDCM)
BA Digital Television and Broadcasting (BATVB)

Phase One Major Allocation (top 40%)

The top 40% of students in the department will be allocated to their first choice major according to the following criteria:

  1. Cumulative grade point average (CGPA) at the end of Semester B;
  2. No failed grades in any courses in Semesters A and B; and
  3. Completion of at least 30 credit units in Semesters A and B, including the number of credit units specified by the College of Liberal Arts and Social Science/Department of Media and Communication for the required courses as presented in the table below:
Required courses for top 40% majors allocation specified by the College and the Department
Specified by the College Two College foundation courses, one from the group of liberal arts studies and one from the group of social sciences studies.
(6 credit units)
Specified by the Department of Media and Communication Two College-specified courses (6 credit units)

Phase Two Major Allocation (remaining 60%)

The other 60% of students will be allocated a major of their choice, subject to the availability of places and the following selection criteria.

BA - Media and Communication (BAMDCM) and
BA - Digital Television and Broadcasting (BATVB)

  1. CGPA (70%)
  2. Composite Measures (30%)
    • English score in HKDSE or equivalent public exams (10%)
    • Chinese score in HKDSE or equivalent public exams (10%)
    • Personal Statement (10%)
